Restoring my 83 f150 4x4 and one of the last things i need to do mechanically is fix the parking brake i tightened the cable as much as i could and the brake will grab but hardly anything at all and the pedal also wont lock not really sure what to look for any help would be greatly appreciated
It's usually the rear cables going to the wheels. They all like to rust and freeze up. If you do get them to work then they usually stick and the rear brakes drag.
You can check this out on the side of the frame a little bit behind the cab door on the driver's side. There you will see the cable from up front which rarely gives any problems, and then the two cables going to each wheel. They are relatively cheap at the parts store.
Is there a drawing that shows the details of the location on the parking brake pedal switch? I realize the dash brake light can be lit by the sensor on the proportioning valve but if the parking brake is set it will light also.
My brakes are fine but the light stays lit. If I lift the parking brake pedal with my foot 1/16" the light goes out. I suspect an adjustment or switch replacement is all it needs.
I just can't seem to locate it.
Any info appreciated
Tnx Fred
No drawing handy, but just look for a single-wire connector on the pedal assembly. IIRC, it's a purple wire. That's where the switch will be.
But it sounds like you may have some slack in the cable. When you pull the release handle, the brakes should return with enough spring force to pull the pedal all the way up, enough to turn off the switch.
