Tires for 01 Dually?

I have run the 235/85-16 for years. Always wanted a little bigger tire, mostly just for looks but with 75 and 80 mph speed limits here rpm reduction won't hurt.

Tire Rack won't even talk about a different size for this truck.
So without spacers does anyone run a different tire than what is listed on the door.

I don't care about brand loyalty just sizes.

I ran 255/85R16's on my previous trucks, they are taller and just a bit wider. Go to Discount and ask for a plus one. Only problem with odd ball size tires is if you need to buy a tire during a road trip you might be SOL. Best to stay with the common size if you travel.

Thanx Gatordog
That is the right idea but they are rare indeed. the 2 big online stores only show it in a BFG Mud, a little too aggressive for my use.

All of the installers are quirky and afraid of liability when going up one or more sizes on a dually due to the fact that if some bone head has the tires under-inflated for ride comfort and then tows something heavy or throws something heavy in the bed, then the sidewalls rub and you could have a blowout....I guess you already know this...hence the comment about spacers.

You can buy the tires from Discount, they have the best price, and take them to a local shop to have them installed...for cash... Se Habla?... THE best tire dudes in my neck of the woods...

Here is what Discount has for sizes in Michelin:

Yes rare now, but years ago everybody made them. I had several 255's on different trucks they looked cool. Kept that narrow profile that I like. The only ones that were no good were the most expensive, Goodyear Wranglers. Since then I have never bought another Goodyear.

jhl3 thanx for the long list of tires that are shorter than the original. The last one (285/75) is 1.1 inches taller but the section width is 11.2 inches compared to 9.2 and I only have 1.25 inch gap on the stockers unloaded.

So I'm still looking for suggestions and real world experience from guys that have trucks like mine.

No problem. I prefaced it...did you read it...Sorry it was not helpful. I started to edit the list to remove the shorter ones...I get it...something more important came up, due to my gorgeous wife, so I hit send.

Got it, I have never owned a dually...see signature...e99 CCLB DRW=Dual Rear Wheels...+...4x4 = 6WD... You make BIG funny cause you from Texas. LOL

Good luck to yah pardner... Maybe I'll see you if you ever get down towards Somerset.

Thanx again jl3,
I'm sure you have tried all of those on your dually so what size did you like?

As for the Michellin ltx ms I have been running them on my work trucks since 1983. Now I am looking for something that does not turn into slicks with slightest bit of mud. A little taller and just a bit wider would not hurt.

I have 265/75/16 and they would be fine if I didn't have airbags. I have to run a 1/4" spacer behind my rear duals to keep the inside tire from rubbing my airbags. Which barely lets the outside wheel center on the hub when bolted on. It would be better if I had all steel wheels since the rear outer is aluminum and 3 times as thick which eats up a lot of hub mating surface. My next tires will either be the stock 235/85/16 or the Toyo M55 255/85/16.

My brother in law is running the Toyo mud terrain 255/85/16 and they barely fit/clear. They are a little noisy but not horrible.

Check out the Toyo M55 255/85/16. It's more like an all terrain tread.

M-55 | Toyo Tires

They are more expensive and usually have to be ordered also.

Glockholiday, how much gap is left between the rears with the 265/75?

Thanx for the Toyo link, allot of options there that don't come up at Discount or TireRack.

I've run 265/75 R 16 tires for over 100k miles so far with no problems. I do keep the rear tires at 80 psi and the front at 70 psi.

I found this out the hard way Summer 2014 down in Sargent...

Needless to say, right after I got back and after a $1200 tow bill, I went out and traded my worthless Michelin LTX M/S tires in for some BFG All-Terrains that since then, haven't let me down.

I recently put a set of BFG KO2s on The Monster and Rudolph and they're light years better than the old KOs.

The problem with the 265/75 is they are no taller than the stock.

TD, I may end up there in the stock size. A buddy recently switched from ltx to bfg on his doge and he likes them too.

I really want taller so 255/85 is my only option without getting too wide. There is a 20 page thread on this tire size alone on Expedition portal. There a couple other Ford dually guys in on that but apparently it won't work on Doges.

Today I strolled into my local independent tire retailer and ask if he could sell me some tires without arguing with me? He's known me a while
I asked him to order me 6 of these coopers, he refused, said I'd hate um sleep on think about it. I can't find anything less aggressive in this size.
Cooper Tire & Rubber Company - Discoverer S/T?

Any thoughts on these Coopers????

I just checked Discount / America Tires. They only list one for your 255/85-16.
Tire Products By Vehicle - America's Tire
They are special order here in SoCal...

Don, that BFG is a straight up mud tire the cooper at least claims to have good treadwear and road manners. That is one of the few I'd seen along with the Toyo's that were mentioned above.
