4WD manual shifter 1991 F150 w/automatic E4OD

My 4WD will only shift from 2H to 4H. I can't get into Low. The shifter won't move side to side in order to shift it. Looking at the shifter from below I think it is rusty and have sprayed it several times with WD40 but no progress. Where can I find a diagram of what things are supposed to look like? My Haynes is pretty vague. Also the linkage looks pretty deteriorated where it connects to the transfer case and I am afraid to mess with it for fear it will fall apart and not work at all. Can it be rebuilt or where can I find parts for it or even another shifter?

Thanks.

Stupid question.....

But, when you try to shift the transfer case from 4H to 4L, is your E4OD in gear, P, or N? On my '90 F150 (and previously on my '01 Jeep Cherokee) the only time the transfer cases allowed shifting to 4L is when the transmission was in Neutral.

Could you post a pic of your shifter from underneath? I am wondering if, somewhere along the line, someone replaced it with a later version? The later ones are very prone to freezing up due to rust inside - also, on the later version, you push down to go to 4L, as opposed to pulling the lever to the left on your model.

I am only going by the shifter **** hat appears you pull the shifter to the left and then back for Low range. It doesn't seem to want to push down either. The damned **** pulled off in the middle of trying to shift it.

I'm not able to post a pic, but I could text one if I had a number to send it to.

Hey, so I haven't kept up with all of the modern technology that is out there, but I'm a bit older than most of you guys!

Have you ever put it in 4l before I suppose you could have gotten mud in there to keep it from going to 4l try hosing the transmission off

Let me explain a little. I bought this truck about two years ago. It has only 23,000 original miles on it because it was only used by a small business to plow their lot for a few years and then a farmer bought it to use on his farm for a few years, but he never really used it. He died in 2007 and the truck sat in his barn for several years until his brother got it out and fixed a few things and then sold it to me. I doubt it was ever modified by anyone. I have never been able to put it in low range. I have tried in gear, neutral and park, but it will only drop back one notch to 4Hi and the light does come on and the 4WD does work as I have used it to plow snow. I don't have an owner's manual.

Get under there are lube it up, and pull a lot more firmly than you think you should. Don't necessarily yank as you don't want to bend or break anything, but they get very stiff when not occasionally shifted into lo.

Once you get it in low, make it a practice to shift in and out of low range every now and then.

Does anybody have an exploded view of what the shift mechanism looks like? I can't see up in there what it looks like to be sure I am spraying the right places. I have tried prying sideways where the bottom end of the shifter is but no luck. Also I need to know what the connectors are supposed to look like that hold the linkage that goes to the transfer case. Mine look like they have all corroded away and are about to fall apart. There are just little round nubs where I think should be either clips or maybe nuts that hold things together. I can see that there are nylon bushings on both ends but what holds things together?

Put shifter in neutral, then shift into 4lo. Your shifter cant be in park or drive it must be in neutral.

Try pulling the shifter off its one bolt and the linkage

The bolt is about 1 inch
Pickle fork or a screwdriver for the linkage

My question is mainly about the linkage. Mine is so corroded away that I can't tell what it is supposed to look like and I am afraid to try to take it apart for fear it won't go back together. Is there a repair kit available or some kind of upgrade? That's why I was looking for a diagram or exploded view showing the detail of it. The shifter won't move sideways once I shift to 4 Hi and I assume it is rusted and needs to be freed up.
