56 F-100 dowel pin

I am having problems with my hood shutting tightly. And it seems like I can tighten the dowel pin and then it shuts as it should but the next time you have it open you have to adjust it again. I pulled the dowel pin out and I am not sure it was ever installed correctly. Then is a large square nut on top that you have to reach up in the hood to hold with a 3/4"wrench to tighten, but there is no lock nut on top of it. Should there be? The order of the hardware as it is installed is the dowell pin, spring cup, spring, a nut inside the spring threaded onto the dowel pin (is that supposed to be the lock nut?) then it all goes thru the support of the hood, and then the square nut holds it all in at the top. Please let me know if this set up is wrong. Thanks!

It sounds like you may have the parts in the wrong order.

Mid Fifty catalog also shows 2 hex nuts on dowel pin, not single square nut.

Thanks Ax and Harleymsn! So then up inside the hood there are two nuts. One for the adjustment length of the dowell pin and the other for locking down the dowell pin nut. They are supposed to be one on top of the other. Is that right?

Got it repaired guys. Found that the square nut that someone put in for the top nut on the dowel pin ( no lock nut was installed on top of it) was partially stripped. Put on two new 1/2 inch by 20 thread nuts adjusted the dowel pin length and now it shuts good and tight. Thanks!
