T-18 versus NP 435?

Hi Fellas,

I was chatting with a friend of mine about these two 4-speed transmissions as they were offered by FoMoCo for 1965/66 F100/250 2WD/4WD trucks. My friend's opinion is that the T18 was only offered in the '65/'66 F100s and the NP 435 was installed in the F250s. Based on his claim, he figures the NP 435 was deemed a tougher/stronger transmission than the T18.

So help me solve this -- Were either transmissions available in the '65/'66 F100/250 trucks?

Were they offered behind any available engine?

Does anyone have an opinion that one of these 4-speed transmissions would be deemed "more heavy duty" than the other?

Thanks in advance your shared wisdom, Guys!

Usually fellers run out of beer or can't stay awake long enough to get this level of discussion. Since you and your buddy have the fortitude to argue about near 60 year old transmission designs, read on and make up your own mind. Note that the NP435 can't be flat towed so that could be a deciding feature and may tip the table completely in favor of the BW box.

85e150six4mtod, thanks for the quick reply and the links! Most helpful!

Regarding the content of weekend beer-fest discussions around the bonfire around these parts in the middle of the mitten (Mid-Michigan),,, sometimes there is a surplus of cold beers, no mosquitoes, and we talk about our trucks both past and present.....

Thanks again, Dude!

I have a 1966 F250. It came with a T18...so I dunno if it's tougher, but you could get it in an F250...

Np435 has lower gearing and I've seen one last over 700000 miles and it's still going so they do last the only t18 I've ever seen was in a 1/2 ton piece of junk I do realize they came in bigger trucks I always thought they were basically identical in strength
