Help identifying transmission and year of transfer case

Hey all,

I have a 65 that was converted to 4WD. I've read through a number of posts regarding the numbers on my Dana 24 transfer case tag (300205 3), but I didn't see if the 3 at the end signified a given year or years manufactured.

Second, I can BARELY read the tag on the transmission, but it LOOKS like the following:

FD8 V
028914

Anything? Thanks!

-Ben

I thought I'd give this one bump before abandonment occurs and I go back to scratching my head.

For the Dana 24 I see listings for Transfer Case in the MPC

300205-5 is listed for 1959-1963

1959 - Section 70 page 942
1960 - Section 70 page 944
1961 - Section 70 page 947
1962 - Section 70 page 951
1963 - Section 70 page 958

300205-6 or -8 is listed for 1964-1966

1964 - Section 70 page 13
1965 - Section 70 page 19
1966 - Section 70 page 25

I don't see any 300205-3 in any of those years.

There's no listing for 300205 3 for any year Ford or Bronco. What type of trans does it have?

A GREAT question. heh

I listed what I could see from the tag on the side of the tranny housing, but it was REALLY tough to make out. I feel confident about the numbers I listed above (028914),but I'm iffy on the letters/numbers combo (FD8 V).

Now that I look at the fische for the transmissions for my year/motor, PDB-A makes a lot of sense. "F" could be P, and "8" could be a B. Maybe someone stamped the "A" upside down? lol

PDB-A is an MX Cruise-O-Matic A/T used with the 352 in 1965/66 F100/350's. No F100/250 4WD was available with an A/T until 1973.

That does look like a 3 to me, also.

I decided to take a couple of pictures of my plates so you have a couple of serial numbers to go with. Maybe others will post their numbers and (if original to the truck) it might start to show a rough idea of your year.

1966 F250 4x4 Vin #831340
Dana 24 300205-6 - serial number - 735737

1966 F250 4x4 Vin #833305
Dana 24 300205-6 - serial number - 745719

I have a hunch yours is older judging from the serial number on it and the 3 instead of a 5 or 6.

I hope that helps some.

So this truck started as a 2WD...does that matter?

Of course it matters, because what was used to convert it to 4WD?

The 300205 3 transfer case was not used with any year Ford, so what is it from?

That's really what I'm trying to find out Let me be super clear, I know next to nothing about these things, as I bought the truck to not only enjoy a vintage ride, but to learn a lot during the rebuild. So, I was being very serious when I asked if it mattered...not a wise guy. Do you need a certain type of transmission to drive a divorced transfer case? If not, this *could* be the appropriate, stock transmission. If so...I have no idea. I'm headed to the shop right now to go and gather more intel in the form of other tags, stamping, bell housing shape/construction, etc.

What's amazing is this same BOM#300205-3 transfer case is seen multiple times right here on this forum, on other's ford trucks, but I can't seem to find an origin! I do appreciate your help and expertise

Can you provide a couple of links to these others that you are seeing? I'm only finding one other reference to the 300205-3 across the entire site and it's in the 1957-60 section.

Any transmission can turn a divorced transfer case.

Where?
Upper/Lower pics: 1959/60 F100/250 4WD: 300205-5

Same as 1961/64 F100/250 4WD: 300205-5

There's no such thing as a 300205-3 Transfer Case for any Ford.
