You know Berry it's kind of funny I guess, I recently had misfire code on my 2008 with 64K miles. Showing a misfire code and a o2 sensor code. I just had the plugs changed at 60K. So I started researching online and see that thousands of people have the misfire problem with the 5.4L 3 valve Ford engine and there are numerous threads on all kinds of sites about them. But there are almost no resolutions given. It seems people chase these things for a while on these threads and then just go away. I took mine to the Ford dealer and they said it needs a O2 sensor for $300. So I say OK. They call me back and say the manifold has a hole in it needs replaced at $900. I say OK. Get the truck back a couple of days later $1240 all tolled. The truck seems to be running good now, but I am kind of waiting for the next shoe to drop with all these stories I read. This after just dropping $800 on the rear brakes including $500 for the backing plates that just rusted off the car. And the flaking paint on the hood and rear hatch is getting worse. And the rocker panel above the running board below the passenger front door is rotted through. I'm starting to sour on this ride a bit.

Might be time to trade her in. When you start feeling bad you have to weigh whether to continue down the road or cut bait.

You might be on to something Berry. only about 3 weeks after getting the truck back the engine misfires are back. I am tired of dealer runaround so I call my local mechanic who I use for non dealer repairs. He says, "Take it to the dealer." He doesn't even want to touch it. I took it to the dealer today. They say engine misfire on same cylinder they did the O2 sensor. They say sensor is working properly but they found a crack in the coil pack on that cylinder. He said new coil pack and new plug $350 should be done today. I said we just had the plugs replaced at 61K only 65K on it now. He says they can't take a chance that the cracked coil pack didn't damage the plug. I told him I am nervous about all the stories I have read about people chasing engine misfires with thousands of dollars and not getting good resolutions. He said he doesn't blame me. Not inspiring confidence here.

Did the coil replacement fix anything?

It seems to be running right now. We shall see if this fixes it or the "hunt" continues. Thanks for your concern Berry.

Will do. So far so good, though. Hope that was it. We got spared the big storm over the weekend, but probably won't be so lucky going forward. The weather handling prowess of the Expy is unmatched by anything else I have owned and will need to rely on it when the bad weather gets here..

What?! A Motorcraft O2 sensor can be had for about $60. You can get a Bosch for about $35. Advance Auto and several other chains loan out O2 removal tools for free. The whole job might take 20 minutes. $300 is ridiculous.

I know this is late to the party, but when there is a shudder, its 90% Coil pack on every ford I ever owned. 01 F150, 99 Explorer, 04 Excursion, 00 F150. usually you will get a misfire on the cylinder, however at 140K miles, replacing plugs and cops are a must. I usually started replacing around 125k-135K miles on every vehicle. Hope it keeps running smooth.

Thanks for that tip. I will know for next time. As far as plugs go I was told not to wait past 60K miles or you will never get them out.
