I picked up a 1965 F-100 junk yard parts truck with the Custom Cab and side toolbox. Of course there was no key with it. I'm taking all the parts off it I want to save, to keep them out of another Maine winter. I got the tool box off, but want to know is there a way to open it? I know I can take it to a locksmith but would rather do it myself. If I take the two screws off on top of the box, to the rear of the latch, would that do anything?
No, to the question of just 'removing the bolts '. Take it to the lock smith and have a couple keys made while your there. If you don't like his price, take it to a different smith.
Tell him what it goes to and he might think your cool enough to just do it free. :-)
I'm not sure if there is anything in there or not. I had to grind the heads off the mounting bolts and knock the bolt bodies and nuts into the box. May just be bolt parts rattling around in there.
The hinge pins are peened on both ends, so I would have to grind one side off to knock them out.
I tried to pick the lock with a couple of dental picks but no luck.
Did the boxes have their own key, or did it use the cab keys?
I need to check the cab floor for keys. The windshield was broken in towards the cab and there is glass and leaves and pine needles all over the floor. Maybe a key is around there somewhere.
They had there own key. Take a grinder and grind as much of the lock as possible then a small hammer and small chisel. A die grinder may take all of the lock off.
I agree with the locksmith idea...you're going to need a key anyway. Or go ahead and destroy the lock and buy one with a key...couldn't cost much...then you have a key!
