Grinding Noise When Putting in Reverse, Please Help!
Hello All,
I am new to the site and a new Bronco owner. Please take it easy on me...
I just recently bought a 1993 Ford Bronco, Eddie Bauer edition. It's a 5.8, 351w motor, Model: E4OD (so I've researched). It is a 4x4. It has 136,000 miles on it. Still in VERY good cosmetic shape, and everything runs well, until today.
The problem I am having started out of nowhere so it seems.
I have owned the Bronco for little over 2 months, with no issues.
Until today, when I started it up, let it idle down like I'd been told, and went to shift it into reverse, and I hear this god awful grinding noise. The truck won't move, and I had to get a buddy to help me push it out of the parking stall so I could drive it off. Here's the weird thing - it runs PERFECTLY normal when driving forward. No hard shifts, no abnormal sounds when driving, etc...
Like I said, the only problem is it started making this grinding noise ONLY in reverse and won't move at all.
My question, quite obviously, is what is the cause of this?
I've tried to research it myself... and not knowing much about it mechanically, I cannot make an educated decision myself, with causes ranging from a rear gear, to the clutch not engaging, the transmission (I hope not...), and the transfer case malfunctioning. And, as simple as the Tranny being low on fluid.
Can someone please help me out here?
I am unfortunately a poor college kid (I know, older trucks can be expensive)
I wouldn't have taken it, had I not been able to work a deal out with the owners (family friends) that I could pay them via labor around their house, etc... And like I said, the truck runs exceptionally well, until just today.
If it's something I could learn to do myself, that would be outstanding. I am just desperately hoping it's not the transmission needing a complete rebuild, as that can be very expensive...
If anyone could give me some insight to this, and help me fix this issue, I would be absolutely grateful.
Thank you!
