help... converter into transmission

Hi Guys, I am a newbie here and to Ford's. I found a one owner 1976 F150 Custom 4x4, 360 auto. Rebuilt motor is now going back in, problem is this. Went to put the torque converter back into the transmission, sliding over the two gears and getting it to drop down once... gives us about 1/8th inch between a yard stick across the front of transmission... but we need more like 3/4 inch. Is there a trick to getting the converter to drop further into the transmission housing... at this point I can still get my fingers in behind the converter to lift off if needed. The motor was rebuilt with a 390 block as my 360 block had a crack that the shop could not weld. We also pulled the transmission at the first 6 bolt section and left the transfer case mounted to the cross frame member. My sons are trying to help restore this ole girl and we are really having a tough time with this. At this point the transmission will not slide up to the engine block for tightening even when converter bolts slip through the flex plate as they should. Any help will be so appreciated!!!

Twist and push at the same time, work it around and it should eventually seat in. There are two notches on the converter that needs to match with 2 tabs in the transmission. Whatever you do, do not force the engine and trans together without the converter seated properly, you'll break the pump in the trans.

Like myoldfords said, this is very important. Don't force it!
When you install the converter you should feel three "clicks" as you turn and push the converter. The first click is the input shaft engaging the turbine, the second is the stator support engaging the stator and the third (this is one a lot of people forget and this is what causes the damage) is the oil pump being engaged.
With it properly engaged, you'll have more than enough clearance to install it, just be sure the four drive studs are close to lining up with the holes in the flex plate.

IT WORKED... your advice was exactly what we needed. The converter... with the pushing and turning finally dropped down into place. When it is in place one can not get your fingers behind the converter and the transmission bell housing. Thanks so much!!
