Holley 600 problem need advice
OK so my grandfather gave me his 1978 f100 custom with a 302 and a c6 transmission she has dual exhaust and a upgraded coil and possibly a cam I'm not sure on that but she has a holly 1460 600 cfm I have black smoke coming out of the exhaust and the plugs have large amount of carbon build up on them (grandpa never drove it just started it in the yard) but I can tell you i have always remember black smoke coming for the exhaust I rebuilt the carb and it still has black smoke coming from the exhaust and now runs a little rough i have heard holleys run rich and u should but and edelbrock on it here's my question
Sense I'm new to this should I buy a edelbrock cuz there easy-to-use for noobs and if so what size I have seen were either would work but I can't decide so please let me know what u think
Thanks

Take the vaccum line off of the brake booster, rev the engine to approximately 2,000 rpm and stick the hose into a 1/3 can of seafoam and let it suck the seafoam in keep it at 2,000 rpm or above till it sucks the 1/3 of a can in!
It's going to smoke like a frieghttrain but it will clean it out

1) I would start at the Timing .. If the timing is to far retarded you will have incomplete combustion .. Make sure you have the timing nailed .. If you need a walk through on this just let us know ..
2) Have you dialed in the fuel mixture screws .. Again if you need a walk through let us know ..
3) have you adjusted the float levels on the primary and secondary bowls while the vehicle is running .. You want just a very small drip coming out the inspection holes ..
4) check fuel pressure you want 4-7 max
5) lastly we will have to look at the internals of the carb to make sure it is set up for the 302 .. It may be things like jet size accelerator pump diaphragm, accelarator pump cam etc. may have to changed to get rid of the rich fuel condition
Your going to have to clean the plugs as you make changes they will show you the progress best .. This whole process to dial in combustion efficiency can take months so be patient .. It doesn't matter whether you have a edelbrock, carter , or holley carb .. At the end of the day It will be you who decides how much you want to dial it in ..
