Don't you have to subtract the idle hours from the total hours to determine the ratio? I've got 492 total and 105 idle so mine is 3.69 to 1 or 21.3%. Maybe I'm idling too much, huh? They say, in the manual, to let it idle a couple minutes before cutting it off, after running it hard. Does that mean if the oil temp is over 195 or so let it idle a couple minutes? Or if it's under 200 degrees cut it off right away?

You don't need to be concerned about the oil temp. It is the EGT's that you are concerned with.

I generally will let it idle on the road when towing and fueling a couple of minutes. But unloaded I just park it.

I've found that the engine likes to be at 194° at idle. Seems to be where it settles at full operating temp. So, when I'm driving and the engine has worked for 4 hours at 219° (just for example) I like to shut it down when it has cooled to 200° or below.

I have no idea if there is any reason whatsoever to do this, I don't know for a fact that I am doing anything other than wasting fuel. It tends to cool to 200° by the time I've taken the exit ramp, waited to make a left turn, and found a parking spot at the hotel, so I don't have to idle it more than a couple minutes generally.

I'm at 1010 hrs, 192 idle, 43,172 miles.. I guess rounding off I'm at 20%, I don't do math well.

What's your engine hours to idle hours ratio?

Mine's up around 40%, which I guess is about 2.5:1. The low speed city driving is what kills me, I think anything under ~25mph is considered idling hours.

Anytime I actually have to idle I use the high idle mod. Unfortunately it doesn't really affect the clock though.

The reason to let it idle is because the turbo heats up when you cut the engine off it stops circulating oil through the turbo. Otherwise it causes coking inside the turbo where it literally boils off the oil trapped inside the turbo.

Did your '11 have similar idle temps? I've never seen mine that low, although I do typically high idle.

Not sure what mine is now, would have to look. But I do know its horrible. I leave mine idling all the time with A/C in the summer, because screw a hot, heat-soaked black interior.

I'm the polar opposite... Screw a ice cold, frosted inside, hard leather seat. And I like to drive without gloves - so the steering wheel heater is nice too. I also hate shivering while trying to drive. So remote start, let her warm up, and then jump in and go.

Although I used to be in South Florida - so I completely understand your point too.

With this heat, there's just no way to get cooler without A/C. I know it's a waste of diesel but I simply factor those few extra dollars into my fuel budget for the luxury of sometimes having a cool(er) vehicle while getting a to go lunch somewhere. At least winter I can wear more clothes in the winter but having been to AK, I realize AL isn't cold!

I was afraid I've been letting my truck idle too much in the past. Guess not...lately been in a rush most of the time so I just jump in and go.
Total 3004
Idle 492
6.1:1 or 16.4%

Interesting- I just put 10 more hours the last 2 days pulling the horses to the mountains and the truck reads 2489 hours (10 hours more)but still reads 299 idle hours . I guess at 12% rounded off I don't idle near as much at most of you guys.
