does my 351w have an oil cooler?

About to get a new radiator and was going to change the upper and lower hoses at the same time and now I've hit a speed bump. Upon looking up the part number there is two listed. For with an oil cooler and without. I honestly don't know how to tell if I have one or not and the pictures look the same for both.

Does anybody have a picture of the oil cooler or tell me what I'm looking for to see if I have one or not? Thanks

Well I sort of answered my own question but if anybody was wondering, I found out how to tell. See the below link to a thread. A search for "lower radiator hose" didn't return much results in "titles only". If you don't search like that you get way too many results non related to what you are looking for but I did a new search for "oil cooler" and got many results.

I will have to look at my truck underneath later to see if I have this type of lower hose or not but that will tell you if you have a stock oil cooler. Odd things is I'm 90% sure I don't have one b/c I think I would have noticed it when changing the oil. Although I've only done that once since I had the truck so I may have overlooked it but I do have a 351w with the factory towing package.

I know it had a huge oil filter too and with the oil cooler I don't think you can run that. It's a real PITA to get it around and out of there too. What's really odd is it seems trucks with the towing package (and Lightnings) have them. My truck does have the factory towing package but every one I've found with the oil cooler (the 351w anyways) have been 1994-1996. I will report back later as to weather I have one or not.

As you saw, if you have two small lines coming off the lower radiator hose and running to the block near the oil filter, you have an oil cooler. I think all 351W had them but not sure.

With the cooler the factory oil filter is an FL-820S, without the cooler you run an FL-1A.

Maybe the PO of your truck already removed it and used a lower hose for a 302 truck.

Verified I don't have one. Maybe it was removed but either way it's the regular lower hose on mine and no cooler above the filter.

So I'll be the guy to ask, what's the story if you have an oil cooler and use an FL1A?

Won't fit. The length of the FL1A is longer and that is why you use the 820S with a factory oil cooler.

The oil cooler is part of the "Super Cooling package," which is included in the tow package. Not sure if it is an independent option or not...

THe cooler may have been removed due to springing leaks, and thus converted back to a standard filter.
I have read that they can get pinhole leaks, perhaps from lack of coolant maintenance? Just a thought.

Honestly, I wish I could just use a FL1A if it made it easier to change. With the cooler it seems like the clearance is tight maneuvering around the cross member.

1) Drain radiator.

2)Take filter off.

3) Take appropriate size allen wrench & remove nipple from adaptor/sandwich plate.

4) Cut hoses free. Remove lower hose.

5) Bend tab to block back on sandwich plate & unscrew.

6) Remove gasket if it doesn't go with adapter.

7) Screw in nipple.

8) Screw on FL-1A

9) Use regular lower hose.
