These engines don't need much to run:
All you need is fuel, and enough heat to get combustion.
In your case, have you bled the injector lines?
might help.
Once you're getting fuel there, tighten things down, let your glow plugs work(or give it a tiny bit of ether if you don't have GPs setup/connected), and it should start.

I did that once myself; there was a few gallons left in a tank of a truck that we took apart; it had been sitting for several years at least.
Poured it into a bucket; it looked clean(No water) so I threw it in my current rig and just ran it. Ran great.

All our pumps are is just a couple of plungers squeezing together. Without anything to block the pressure, it's just like squeezing a hand sprayer without the spray nozzle - you get a little squirt, but not a spray.
Once you tighten the lines back down, the pressure will build up in the line against the injector and /then/ you will see the high injection pressures.

My Dads 2007 sierra was doing the same you can hear it crank but it wont start. The truck fuel filter went out and it was also the part that primes the fuel filter with a pump as soon as we replaced it it was up and running. I know its a different type of truck but maybe this might help. So check that fuel filter and the lines to make sure you are getting pressure. The part was around $170.
