$45 Motorcraft oil filter? Really?
I went to the local dealer to buy some cetane additive as I will be travelling to the U.S next week. I thought I would buy an oil filter since I was there.
$45!
But they gave me a deal...$38.50 out the door.
So, just the oil filter at list price is worth nearly two 6.8 gasser oil changes. Doing it myself of course.

Yes, the dealers think they are gold. I ran into this when I wanted to do my oil change in Connecticut when I was on my way up to Alaska... Your $45 sounds about right. I said forget it too...
I had an oil filter waiting for me in Alaska as I had bought them online. I buy them a couple at a time, with an air filter, and a fuel filter. Since you change the oil twice as often as the other two. As it turns out, around 100 miles from at that time, my new home, I got the change oil soon message. I also used synthetic oil and while I didn't do an oil analysis it still seemed ok to the touch and smell. I also wasn't pulling anything. I believe the oil minder is set for FoMoCo non-syn diesel oil... Syn lasts longer - if you believe the people that do oil analysis.
FWIW, Wal Mart in Connecticut didn't have a filter or I would have bought it there. Wal Mart in Alaska, go figure, does have them. In AK they are still under $20 a filter - they are even cheaper in the L48.
I can give link to online places, but IIRC, you are in Canada... Not sure if the savings transfer well into Canada or not. I'd make sure or pre-order the oil filter for South Dakota. Just to make sure they have it and it is there waiting for you.

I buy mt filters from my dealer, cost was around $14 per oil filter, when I bought the truck he gave me an oil and fuel filter. I cant believe that there are that many dealers that try to gouge their customers. I buy quite a bit of parts from my dealer as we have 5 Fords in the family and they always have treated my fairly, often times parts are cheaper from them vs. other suppliers. I even buy a Motorcraft(836) filter for my lawnmower for less than $4.

Not wanting to start an oil thread war on what's better... I'll give you my opinion and if anyone disagrees it is fine.
Personally, I go by the manual. If you are not towing, not doing extended idles, and not in high heat, then 10w30 FoMoco diesel oil is fine... 5W40 , imho, is always the better oil as it has a greater temperature operational range without degrading.
I usually wait until the second oil change to put in synthetic as well. Generally, because the dealer does the first one for "Free", but even when they didn't do the first one for free I always waited as well.
