Crown Vic IFS Steering question

Ok, so I pugged in a CV IFS into my truck and am finally getting around to pluming the power rack, except for the small problem of not being able to figure out which port is input pressure and which is return.

The CV had the variable power steering on it so originally everything flowed to the VPS unit then back to the rack. My shop manual does not actually show the routing of the lines so I an a bit unsure as to which port is which on the rack.

This unit also has a solenoid on the top of the rack (I assume to choke the flow in some way) but when I dug through the wiring manual it is unclear as to whether I should apply power to it in the run position or not.

There have been quite a few of these CV units installed here on this forum but nobody has given up these small tidbits of information yet.
So I'm asking you guys now, please give it up.

My understanding of the system after dissassembly of the rack is that the elctromagnet switches the valving, I "think" off is normal, and on is for slow parking lot speeds.

It need not be used. I was debating seeing if I could control it using my holley HP ECM. Not sure though.......

One line has a fitting on both ends, again I think that is the input line. The return hose should have just had a clamp on it.

You need to power the solenoid (or it can be gutted) when running.

I'm curious about this as well. I have the lexus sc400 rack and it can be a little hard to steer at very low speeds or stopped, not unbearable but it just doesn't feel like its quite right, it also has an electronic assist selenoid I believe. Its not powered and I don't really want it to be but this has me wondering.

There is an electric proportioning valve on top of the rack that has 2 wires going into it. As I understand it, the body control module sends it voltage making the car more or less easy to steer depending on driving conditions. Low speed very easy, high speed more difficult. Originally I ran it straight 12V off the run side of the ignition switch. This made the steering very easy. almost too easy. So I thought I would just gut the valve. That caused it to have almost no power assist. Now I have powered it back to 12V and might look at running some type of potentiometer to fine tune the voltage to get the feel I want.
