What year switched to in tank high pressure fuel pump?

What year did they switch from the 2 fuel pump setup to the single in tank high pressure pump setup? What is the psi of the single pump setup? And was it available in rear tank only configuration? Doing some planning for the 4.6 swap in my 79 and I recall from my long gone 87 that the rear fuel tanks were the same in shape and mounting...

They did away with the frame rail mounted pressure pump in 1992.

4.9L 45-60, all others 32-45 IIRC.

I love the 4.6L and want to see your conversion!

The single tank setup was called ITR - In Tank Reservoir. Ford converted to ITR starting in 1989 but not sure exactly when. Knowing Ford, it was probably a rolling change late in the 1989 model year. My 1990 F150, built in October 1989, had ITR.

I think the pumps would probably be all the same and the 300 just had a different fuel pressure regulator than the Windsors.

A 4.6 in a truck? That's only a 281... why not go to a 330 (5.4L) and gain some torque? 4.6 should have never been put in a truck... just not enough cubes there IMO. Of course Ford also put the 4.2 V6 in the same trucks that could be had with the 4.6/5.4 but I think they just did that to meet the idiotic CAFE standards.

Let's see some pics of your progress!

The model year 1990 was the beginning of ITR in pickup trucks, for other vehicles it may be different.

I agree about the pumps, Airtex #'s E2059MN front & E2064MN rear for all engines.

I'll disagree, gearing is the equalizer. I put 180K on my 2004 E250 4.6L 4.10 and could get 18 MPG all day. Put 110K on my 2008 E250 5.4L 3.73 and could never top 14 MPG. The 2004 was a much better van for a load.

I was thinking my 1991 F250 5.8L had a rail pump. Memory is fading on that truck.

The F53 went to ITR/Fuel Delivery Module (FDM) in 1989.
The F-series pick-up trucks went to ITR/FDM in 1990.
The E-series vans went to ITR/FDM in 1992.

Thanks for the info guys. Why put a 4.6 in a truck? Why not? My 79 weighs the same or less than the car donating the engine. Probably going for 4.10 gears too.
