putting a bigger motor in my truck

I just got a 1962 Ford Econoline pickup the inline 6 runs great but looking to put a V8 in it so I can pull a 60's model fith wheel camper.

Any suggestions as to what motor I should use? I'm looking at a 302 or a 360. I just turned 20 so still learning about both. Could use any help Givin.

Thanks.

The 302 is not known as a strong torquer. Can be built for go-fast, and a decent base engine, but not ideal for towing. The 351W is almost the same block (taller decks to accommodate more stroke), but with more displacement is a much stronger engine for towing. I'd steer you toward the 351W rather than the 302. It's still not a big-block or a turbo diesel, but it's definitely a step up from the 302 and from just about any 6 cyl gasser.

I don't have any personal experience with the 360. From what I read about it back when it was still being used in new trucks it was low powered but at least it got bad mileage. There were other engines in the same FE family that had more power and better mileage (the 390 I think was considered pretty good).

However it seems like the 360 has a pretty strong (cult?) following now. From what I think I know it might be a good choice if you can figure out what mods to make (new heads? cam?). But I'm sure others will have much more experience with it and can give you better info.
