I recently went muddin in my 2003 Ranger 4x4 XLT 4.0 and my gas mileage dropped to about 10 miles to the gallon. Anyone have any ideas as to why this would happen? One thing I should mention is I had it on the lift yesterday and i checked the differential action it was extemelt difficult to rotate the tires. In my experience with cars the tires should spin in oposite directions with relatively little resistance, is this different for trucks?
Well, WHILE you are mudding your gas mileage will drop because you are in 4x4 mode and you are creeping around with your foot on the throttle all the time. So yeah, that's normal. As far as your other problem, which differential are you talking about?
hmmm well i'll look into it... that would make it really stiff like that? the breather toob sits way up along the bed wall, i don't see how water got in there but its worth a shot.
I would also double check the e-brake linkage underneath the truck, it's possible something got jammed up in there. This happened to me once, although you could smell the brakes heating up after driving. Also if you truck has a limited slip dif in it, it would make it hard to turn the wheels opposite each other. Good luck figuring it out, hope it's nothin major.
yeah i hope its nothing major either... but i haven't noticed any odd smells or anything like that. A friend of mine thinks it might be a bent axle but there aren't strange vibrations or anyting do i have ruled that out.
