Get check engine light for 5 to 15 seconds and a loss in power

Hey guys. So I just bought my first powerstroke. So the problem im having is, I'll be driving down the road under normal conditions not doing anything crazy or towing. I get the check engine light and a huge loss in power. It lasts anywhere from 5 to 15 seconds and it sounds like the truck in running on less cylinders. But it goes away and then it runs fine. So I took it to a shop to get it checked out and after a few hours they called me back saying I basically nred a new engine, tranny, and suspension. Their suggestion was to basically scrap the truck and get what I can for it from a junkyard and that its unsafe. They of course did diagnostics on the whole truck, this is what they came back with...

Needs a steering box
upper and lower ball joints
repack wheel bearings
axel u joints
front driveshaft u joints
outer tie rods
drag link ends
rear u joints and straps
front axel seals
front spring bushing
pcm
map
Exhaust pressure sensor
new motor
new Trans

They quoted me 20k to fix it.
I was just blown away with that and it freaked me out. I bought it in California and drove it back to arizona with no problem. I just wasn't expecting to drop it off and get a whole slew of things thrown at me and having them say scrap the truck. Here are the codes from the diagnostics
P0475
P0605
P0267
P0472
P0603
P0236

What do you guys know about that check engine light and it losing power? I didn't even get a straight answer about that from the shop. Also do you think the truck is safe to drive?

Get it away from those guys!!! I don't see what could be causing your problems but some of these guys might know. The 0267 might be your problem.

I'd start by checking the (4) valve cover electrical connections. Look for burnt or melted plastic.

I about fell off my chair when I read 20K to fix. Run and run fast from those guys. They obviously don't have a clue.

I agree with Phil, start with checking the valve cover connections. If there are any melted/burned pins, the gaskets will require replacement. Not too bad of job if your handy with the tools.

By the way, welcome to FTE! Your in the right place!

EDIT: Glenn, that link is awesome, tried to rep, but apparently I'm in rep jail.

Thanks for the help guys. I know I need a new MAP sensor. I just checked the valve cover connectors they looked good except for the rear left one. It had oil and dirt all over the male end and it looks like one of the pins is messed up. It's starting to break away from the rest of the male end. Think this may be the problem?

Yeah I about died when they said 20k. I drove it from LA to central arizona in 110 degree weather with stop and go traffic and it did fine. There is no blow by and no coolant in the oil or oil in the coolant. I expected them to say I need some stuff you know because they try to drum up business but I wasn't expecting them to come back with that.

Thanks for the welcome! Heard a lot of good things about this forum site!!

Thanks Thomas and Mad (can't remember your name! LOL).

These guys are getting you in the right direction, if in doubt look at the pins thru a magnify glass.

Yesterday I was getting a 0198 so got online to that link to find out my EOT plug was not staying plugged in. I'll be somewhere where there isn't cell reception and will not be able to find out. I keep telling myself to print that out!!

Chasebonfoey,

Could you post some more information about your truck?

Cab configuration, 2wd or 4wd, how many miles, auto or manual trans, does it have a chip or tuner installed?

Thanks.

Krifenbu,

It's the super cab, 4 wheel drive, manual trans, 224.5k miles and a 6 position tuner

Thanks for the help!

Welcome to FTE! Like Glenn said, get your truck away from that shop ASAP. They either don't have a clue what they are doing, or they are trying to rip you off. The UVCH wiring could be the problem. I would replace those and the pigtails and then go from there. The most of the test of that list of stuff they said was wrong with your truck is just general maintenance stuff, and If you drove it from CA to AZ, then I seriously doubt you need a new engine or trans.

Yeah it sounds like you need to pull the valve covers and inspect the UVCH and check the resistance of the GPs. If it turns out that the UHVC, External VCH, and VC Gaskets all need replaced then I'd suggest converting to the SD style harnesses.

At least now you know where not to take your truck for service. Start with the valve cover gaskets and go from there. Lots of great guys here to lend a hand
The gaskets are not too bad a job
