Last weekend I was returning form a camping trip. My gcwr is maxed at 12000. The outside temp was around 85 deg. I installed a Sunpro temp gauge and sensors, one in the pan and one in the diag. port . I do have a tranny cooler. Anyway when im driving at 55-60 everything is fine and the gauge reads 150deg.(first of all i thnk the temp is wrong.) but when going through small towns the diag. port reading reads around 165 deg. and first gear slips when taking off from a stop. This is the first time this has happen . I recently changed the filter and fluid.
When im not towing anything my temp gauge still reads 150(after a long period of time). Im lost .. help!!!
Some filters are tricky to install properly. They often have an O ring or rubber donut type gasket that can be pinched or damaged during installation. If they are damaged or not in place, you might suck air into the pickup which would cause problems in the hydraulic system.
Sometimes you can check this by checking the fluid after a normal drive. Follow the owners manual to properly check the fluid, but what you are looking for is lots of bubbles all up and down the stick. Normally you will have a few bubbles, say 5 or 10 or something like that. What we are looking for is a stick covered in bubbles including way above the full mark. That might be a symptom of an air leak in the pickup.
I am assuming the tranny worked fine before the change.
