massive oil leak after water pump and t stat fix

Hey fellas so I just did a water pump upper and lower hoses and thermostat on my truck. I fired it up was great until 170 degrees then I saw a leak and I moved the truck and it was a big puddle of oil. Moved it back and in 5 min leaked 2 quarts. I had a leak by the lift pump and by the water pump from oil which I brake cleaned off when I changed the water pump and now somewhere that I can't see is leaking like a sive. Any ideas?

Did you make sure to put all the bolts back in the right place on the water pump, and did you use thread sealant on the ones that need it?

There are a couple of bolts on the pump that go through an oil galley. You'll know which ones because the threads will have been wet with oil. These need some sort of thread sealant when installed to eliminate leaks. It's also crucial to get the bolts in the right spots since some are longer than others.

Ok so I did not know that. They all were soaked in oil which I thought was because there was oil and gunk on the waterpump. Do you have a diagram of the ones that need rtv

That is great information to know. Just in general.

You should be able to search it easily. It's been well documented before.

There's 4 of them, near the center of the pump (2 top, 2 bottom). I can't remember exactly which ones right now, but most new pumps come with instructions for these bolts specifically (and sometimes come with new bolts due to a re-design in the boss height).

I tried Googling it for you, but couldn't find a visual showing EXACTLY which one. Push come to shove, a little thread sealant on all of them wouldn't hurt, I guess.

Ok so I looked at it and the water pump is dry as a bone. I can't see the oil leak. But it's coming from somewhere above the engine cradle. It still leaks a lot but idk what it is the oil cooler has a small leak that I've had for a while but it's not leaking 2 quarts in 5 min

FWIW, the Water Pump design was changed. In 88/89?? IF You get a new casting, the bolts are all the same. If You get an new casting, the upper bolt bosses are longer and You don't need to worry about the bolts hitting the IP gear. The Old casting requires the proper bolts in the upper mounting holes, or they will hit the IP gear. See Pic Link Below.

Those bolts would give you a few drops at most. Leaking through the threads. Not a huge puddle.

Use engine degreaser and clean off motor, then check again for leaks. Gaskets from what I know for how old these are tend to leak due to age. Once I go and rebuild mine im expecting every gasket is going to be done. Also having the oil cap off can be a culprit. Seen that a few times with customer cars. But it make a mess underneath the hood. Keep us posted.

do they actually go into an oil galley, or oil return? find it hard to believe ford/International would want little pieces of RTV unfiltered going into the pressurized oil stream. just my observation that has been bugging me since yesterday. sorry to hijack.

Its an oil return more or less. Under the water pump is the timing cover. Under the timing cover is the timing gears, the gears on the crankshaft, camshaft and injection pump.

What was the cause of the leak?

I am having this issue. What was the ultimate fix?
