Hello all, I've got an 86 F-150 EFI with 302, auto w/overdrive. For a while now I've had issues with the fuel guage barely working for both tanks. I recently replaced the front tank sending unit with an aftermarket "Spectra Premium" & pump. It works great except for the float arm needing an adjustment. It now tells me I'm empty after 150 miles, and after not having a working guage, I know I'm good for at least 225 miles before I'm out. The issue I'm concerned with is, sometimes it feels as if I'm running out of fuel "skipping?" when its first started. I have noticed it doing the same near the end of a tank as well, after its warmed up. I had the same issue on the original sending units & just passed it off as a worn out pump. Could my fuel lines be introducing air & make the truck feel as if it's skipping? I mean they are 30 years old. And to let you all know, the Dist cap, button, plugs & wires have all been changed within the last 6 months. And I run Lucas injector cleaner evey other month on both tanks. I know this is a boatload of questions, but any help would be appreciated.
Water likes to lay down in the bottom of the tank. Put some dry gas in the tank and see if that makes the problem go away. It's just alcohol and will let the water mix with the fuel and pull it up out of the tank and burn it in the engine.
Franklin, Gas dryer additive? Would rubbing alcohol do the same thing? I'm sure I have a bottle of that here. Seems like I've heard of an old school mechanic doing that years ago.
