ZF5 speed trans serial numbers

I am sure someone has asked and answered this question already but I can not find it.

I have a ZF5, I was told it came from behind a 460, but someone told me the one I had came from a 7.3 or 6.9.

What are the serial numbers for a diesel and what are the ones for a 460?

I am trying to sell it and don't want to misinform a buyer.

Here is the break down for ZF5s. VERY SIMPLE

87-95 are S-42 variety rated @ 420ft/lbs
96/97 are S-47 variety rated at 470ft/lbs

ALL small block gas are INTERNAL slave and have a 5.72 1st gear(on tag on side)
ALL big block gas are EXTERNAL slave and have a 5.72 1st gear(on tag on side)
s-42 diesel are EXTERNAL slave and have a 4.14 1st gear(on tag on side)
s-47 diesel are EXTERNAL slave and have a 5.08 1st gear (on tag on side)

So To use a Gas big block all ya need is to change the gear to a 5.08

The big block ford ZF tranny will not bolt up to a diesel engine. The bolt patterns are different.

The top holes measure out the same. The lower holes are not correct but some make a ovalized hole to make it work. The alignment dowel doesn't line up.

Short answer no. Long answer is described by searching hybrid zf5 460 to 7.3

I’ve taken the aluminum spacer off the back of the a 7.3 and used as a template several times to drill holes correctly. In a big block zf bellhousing works perfectly if done correctly.

Did you drill for alignment dowels as well?

With some careful measuring and drill it can be done
