1979 F-700 Rear Brake Drums
I am not 100% sure if this is the right place to post this, so someone please let me know if I have messed up. However, I am working on a 1979 F700 and it needs rear brakes. The drums definitely need replacing and I can't find a part number at all. The drum is 15 inches in diameter, the shoes are 7 inches wide. PLEASE HELP!!!

Most members of this forum have F100/350 pickups, won't know much (if anything at all) about F700's...if that's what it actually is.
Some people tend to confuse F500 and larger series trucks with C & L series trucks. First 3 digits of the VIN define which is which.
AFAIK, only one FTE member has the 1973/79 Ford HEAVY Truck Parts Catalog. It's not someone than only posts in the 1973/79 forum. It's different than 1973/79 (F100/350 & Econoline) Light Truck Parts Catalog.
1979 F700 15" x 7" = hydraulic or air brakes? With 17.5M or 18.5M rear axle capacity? Post the AXLE code to determine which is which.
btw: A coupla days ago in the Large Truck forum, a member asked to have his F900 VIN decoded. It decoded as an LT900 .. a totally different truck than an F900!

I asked a moderator to move your thread to the LARGE TRUCK forum.

AFAIK, only one FTE member has a parts catalog for your truck, as it's different than the one for F100/350's.

I'm going to need your VIN and AXLE code and I will also need to know whether your truck has air or hydraulic brakes, to determine which brake drum is correct.
Read the last line (I edited it in) in post 2.

Oh, the truck has hydraulic brakes and the axle code is stamped "gh n" on the vin plate. The VIN # is F70BVFA8574. Thanks so much for your replies. This is far more encouraging than the guy that didn't want to be bothered at my local Ford dealer! LOL!

Plus, most parts clucks in today's world don't know squat about vehicles older than 10-15 years. They LIE saying they have no parts catalogs for them, because they don't want to bother!
I'll get back to you later tonight (PDT) with the info.

B = 370 4V
V = Kentucky Truck Assembly Plant.
FA8574 = 1979.
AXLE GHN: GH = Eaton model 17221 Two Speed Rear Axle / 6.50/8.86 / 18,500 lbs. Rear Axle Capacity / N = Ford 9,000 lbs. Capacity Front Axle with P/S.
One more hurdle:
15" x 7" rear brakes with 18,500 lbs. capacity rear axle: What size are the wheels, and are they disc or spoke?
If the drums are the original, they have a Ford ID number stamped on them. Could be similar to this: C3TA-1126-L or this: C5TA-1126-W

Thanks so much for all of the info! The wheels are 22.5 and it would be considered spoke. (It has what they refer to as Dayton type wheels).
I will look for a stamping but they are so rusty....
Don't bother.
BTW are you LDS?
I had an uncle named Leathem Daley Smith, but AFAIK, he wasn't related to Joseph Smith.

1985: Attended a gun show at the Salt Palace in SLC. When I took a taxi from the SLC airport, I asked the driver if he could give me a tour.
He was a bishop, gave me the tour, took me everywhere including to "This Is The Place" refused to take any money.
Several hours after returning home Sunday afternoon, the door bell rang, I opened it and there stood two Mormon missionaries.
I didn't give the cab driver my last name or address.
10 or so years later, "She who must be obeyed" and I were touring upstate NY, made a left turn off a rural road, headed south to the NY Turnpike.
She was driving, I was looking at a road map, looked up, we had just passed the Hill Cumorah.
Didn't go back to it, as it was late in the day and she wanted to go to Le Roy to visit the Jello Museum. (sigh)
