78 F100 power steering
Pulled transmission, clutch, bell housing and flywheel to get to rear main seal. Turning steering wheel and pushing truck by hand. Something gave way while turning steering wheel, fluid erupted from top of power steering pump and steering wheel started a grinding noise when turned. For a few feet it would catch and still turn wheels but it eventually just spun w/o wheels moving. Assume grinding I hear whenever I turn the steering wheel/column is spline stripped out inside of power gear box. Is this repairable or is the gear box kaput? Steering wheel is not spinning at column.
Thanks

I'm not sure exactly what happened to your PS box but the manual ones I have owned usually have badly worn bearings in the column and worn out universal joints in the shaft.. You likely found a weak point while it was temporarily not working..
Glad it didn't go out driving down the road
Good luck

If the steering gear box is a Saginaw, I would suggest sending it out to these guys for them to go through and rebuild it.
