Tightening rocker arms 1992 f.150 5.0l

What is the procedure of torquing down the rockers on this stock 5.0l engine? Seems hard to get a straight answer.

On this vintage truck engine the rocker arms are pedestal mounted, non-adjustable. Tightened the rocker arm bolts to 18-24 ft/lbs.

So if i understand i just have to tighten without any adjustments at zero lash. I had them tightened to 22ft pounds but i found them to be a little loose when valve opens. is that normal?

Is it the same procedure between 1992-1996? because the engine was a new block it may have changed since original.

If the engine is not running that is perfectly normal. The hydraulic lifters "pump up" with the engine running and take up the slack, they are designed that way.

The design is exactly the same, assuming no one has machined the pedestals down to accept rocker studs.

Could you give more details on what has been done to the engine? Block work, heads, cam, etc.

Engine is completley stock. New block over 2 years ago that hasnt been run. Just finished it up with new exhaust and now noticing a knock that sound like it was coming from passenger side above cylinders 3 or 4. Pulled plug wires to see if knock would stop or change and there was no change. So i took it apart and i think one of the rocker arm bolts on cyl.3 didnt seem to be tight like the rest so wanted to loosen and re-torque.

Just a quick question here, You said new block, did you also use new push rods? or did you remove everything from the old block and bolt into the new one? What about the lifters? New or used? Did you make sure they're fully pumped up before install?

First you have to ask yourself is the noise in top end or bottom end. If it's top then id run the engine build the pressure. Shutoff. Pull valve cover. Press on rockers...any that have give pushing down would be the ones to consider investigating farther.
maybe someone else has a better way but this is how I've always done it.

In my experience it does not matter.

I tightened the rocker bolts down to 22 ft.lbs and got truck back together. Now truck will not start...not even a kick. checked wires multiple times with no luck. I will investigate further tomorrow.

I'm gonna have a look after work. But I just had a flash back of a ground wire that I removed off the intake support. Not 100% sure
