Speed sensor locations 1994 F150

So I bought this thing at auction -- didn't know a thing about it but it has the classic 300 straight 6 under the hood. Dropped a new battery into it, and it started right up. Brakes are fine; lights and accessories not so much. Working on that. Odometer shows 67,700 but obviously needs a bit of work... Good project truck; engine is clean as a pin so IMO it's worthwhile.

We drive it home; it won't shift out of first in Drive position. We try 2nd and it goes a bit faster. We (being hubby and me) do some routine PM (oil & filter, all points lube, checked radiator etc.) and changed out the transmission fluid and filter.

Still won't up-shift, and now the dash is blank. Speedometer is zero; ditto the odometer read-out. Drat and other comments. Looked for the old Ford Chilton Manual; can't find it. Can't find anything online to tell us exactly where the speed sensors are located, just that there's one on the transmission and one on the rear end. So OK, exactly where on the trans and rear end?!

It's going to need a couple other minor things as well (rebuild of the alternator and driver's side rocker panel), but right now that's what I need to know. I don't want to get under the bloomin' thing and paw around trying to find those d...d speed sensors.

The VSS is on top of the rear differential, be sure to check all of your fuses, if you have an E4OD and I am pretty sure you do, it is a completely computer controlled transmission and won't work correctly without power to it... Be sure to check for trouble codes as any of those can mess you up on that transmission.......

Oh, and welcome to FTE

As previously stated the Vehicle Speed Sensor (only one) is located on top of the rear differential...but that is not your problem.

Check Fuse 18

It powers the device for Odometer display and Speedometer function. It's called a PSOM and it is located behind the instrument cluster on the back of the Speedometer.

It worked! John put both speed sensors in (yes it does have two, one on the tranny and one on the rear end), and it still wouldn't up-shift. So I checked and replaced Fuse 18 and now it's shifting a bit rough but it shifts! Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!

If there is a VSS in the transmission it must be from an earlier model. Ford stopped using the dual VSS setup in 1992 when the speedometer/odometer went to electronic.

Don't know; there was an old "something" that looked like one of the two speed sensors John bought for it, so he took it out and replaced it. It up-shifts rough but now does up-shift and can maintain highway speeds. Did I mention there is only 67K on the truck? True: it was a work truck for Ohio University.

I'm going to cruise the local junkyards for a whole 'nother cab; the driver's side rocker is shot and the passenger side is going. And I'm going to need another rear bumper for it. I expect it to serve us well to haul hay and firewood for quite some time yet.

Yes your truck uses both sensors. The one on the transmission is used for shifting and the one on the rear end is used for RABS, Speed Control and the speedometer & odometer. The one on the transmission is called an OSS (Output Shaft Speed) sensor.
I am not sure if the one on the rear end does much for the transmission but it does tell the PCM Computer how fast the truck is going. I have a truck about the same as yours and when I lost the PSOM the transmission still worked OK.

By the way the transmission you have is a 4R70W transmission and not a E4OD.
Normally The 4.9L engine has the E4OD and no sensor on the transmission as stated above.

Thank you, Bill! Not sure of the "liters" designation of the engine but it is the tried-and-true Classic Ford "straight six;" that's what prompted the hubster to have me bid on it. And I almost got outbid but hubster said "go for it."

Except for the slap-happy transmission (the same as a Ford truck that's parked "up in back" and has been retired to "yard queen" status again) that up-shifts with a snap, it runs swell!

I have never seen a 4.9L truck with a 4R70W transmission. Obviously the truck is not stock.
