I drove my auction truck up to the tire store where my work truck broke down. First time I've had it out of the driveway. Found out that the power steering isn't working. Full of fluid and the belt is intact (had to check to be sure on this truck). What else goes wrong with power steering? I do hear a little bit of squeal from the belt, but the AC and water pump seem to work fine.
Also, the brakes are dead. They'll stop the truck if I'm going slow, but it feels like the pedal hits bottom. No cushion. Again, plenty of fluid, don't see any leaks.
Sounds like either the P.S. pump or the hydroboost unit. I would add master cylinder but that would only affect the brakes.
do you know any way to test those units? What/where is the hydroboost? I've never had a powersteering pump just not work at all. They've usually made noise and got progressively worse. Strange that this would happen to a stolen truck - I presume the brakes and PS were working when it was stolen and that's not something that a thief usually breaks.
Is there anything electrical that could cause those problems?
Hydroboost unit is on the firewall behind the master cylinder, where you'd see the big round vac booster on a gas truck. It runs off the power steering pump, so if the Hydroboost it dead/leaking it might be causing the power steering to not be able to push fluid to the steering gear.
My hydroboost sprang a leak, but I didn't notice steering problems. Might be an internal blockage or a totally dead PS pump?
