1997 f-150 Convertible Orginal

I am looking at purchasing the 1 of 1 F150 Convertible. Does any one have any more detailed info. This is what I got from the 2nd owner of the Truck

This is a one-of-a-kind custom topless pickup truck that was created by the former SVT crew at Ford back in 1996. Long story short, they tried to make this a production vehicle, but failed to meet certain standards. One of the SVT members brought it to an auction in Ft. Lauderdale.

Interesting, but I don't buy that story. Looks like someone just wanted a topless F-150. I wouldn't pay a premium for it.

1 of 1 makes the possibility of it being a SVT build 0% in my mind. There definitely isn't anything else about the truck to insinuate that it is a SVT...no badging, no paint...no styling that would lead me to believe its true. Definitely do not pay more for it than you would the average F150 of that age, condition, miles, etc. Also look very closely to ensure that the modifications have been professionally done. I'd hate to see someone spend good money on a hack job!!

What does CarFax say about it? Also see if there is a window sticker on file for it.

Ford would NEVER sell a prototype like this. Any test or demonstration vehicle that was modified more than simple bolt on parts was crushed when they were done with it. The liability of selling a modified vehicle is astronomical. And to sell one that they KNOW doesn't meet certain standards would never, never happen.

Either the story is false or the truck was stolen from Ford.

no way

Well I can tell you NO WAY. In my past life 1995 to 2000 I worked for Roush. Our shop did all SVT prototype. We did the SVT contour, The Lightning, The sn95 Cobra, Cobra R. We did ALL proto type builds for them. We also did there show cars...429 boss, Super Stallion, Indigos,Super Bird, Cobra R Ranger etc. etc. During this time SVT Director was John Coletti....John would not have any part in a truck like that...The were into performance...NEVER BLING...

Oh and to go along with what Mark said ..we scrapped cars for way less than cutting the roof off...Any vehicle used by Engineering groups that even only recieved insturmentation..ie test probes, thermal couples, we scraped them..ford would not sell....ever...we did have some cars for ride and drive evaluations...100% out of the factory production....and those vehicles went to a special program...but only ford employees could buy them...and I think they had to sign something that they would not sell them for a period of time....

As you have the VIN see if it comes up with a window sticker. It might show were it was first delivered to. If it's a dealer than I don't think the story holds water.

I bought a few of those cars. Ford had a used car lot only available to employees. They selected some of the evaluation cars to put on this lot, and the ones they didn't select were sold wholesale at dealer's auctions as regular used cars. I don't remember any restriction on reselling the vehicle.

But none of these vehicles was modified in any way.

And by the way, I worked for Roush, too. 1982-1988. There were only 50 employees in the whole place when I started there.
