1999 ford f250 7.3 problem?

Hello guys,im new here and i have a little problem with my 1999 f250 7.3 power stroke diesel. Every once in awhile, while driving the truck would die completely but i switch it into neutral and started right up. Anyone have any idea what could be the problem? Thanks.

Was there any maintenance done to the truck before this started occurring? Does it happen in the same spot on the road? Do you have a code reader or any way to communicate with the OBDII?

Welcome to FTE as well!

I recently bought the truck like a week or two and i can't tell you if the people who i bought it from did any maintenance or not. And yes it happened twice right in the same spot an 3rd time a mile after. And no i don't have any code reader.. some people said it might bet the Cam sensor but i like to ask opinions before jumping to conclusion.

And thank you

It could be your cam sensor (cps) or injection oil pressure sensor (icp). These two are known to fail on 7.3s and can sometimes be replaced by aftermarket sensors when the PO tries to save a buck. Generally aftermarket sensors are not adequately shielded and can be affected by rf interference. If it shuts down when you go by power lines, radio/tv antennas, or anything along those lines it is most likely an aftermarket sensor causing your issues.

If that is not the case then it could still be either of those two, but more data would probably be needed to make a complete confirmation, instead of the "throw parts at it" method. I'm sure more guys will be along with their thoughts though to help figure it out.

Goodnight then, and don't worry, the guys here on FTE will help you get it figured out.

Considering that it is a good idea to carry a spare CPS and tools to change it on the side of the road, I would get a Ford OEM CPS and change it out. If the problem persists then you have ruled that out and now have a spare in the glove box. My truck displayed the same behavior and it turned out the be the CPS.

Hope you figure it out, and welcome to the org.

The fact that it happens in the same general location screams ICP sensor.

Can you post the location that it happens so we can take a look on google maps to see if there is anything obvious that could be causing electromagnetic interference?

If you have a small hand held walkie talkie you can try keying the mic near the front of the truck and see if that causes it to stall ( that's how one member here discovered the EMF issue).

This is the single coolest problem solving technique I have heard of since being born. You, sir, win the internet for today

Regardless what you do, kel1278, you should always carry a spare CPS. Its worth its weight in gold when you're stuck on the side of the road. Post back and let us know what happens, and welcome to the forum! Have a beer

I'm 99% sure it's the cam shaft positioning sensor... I changed mine twice this year with after market garbage because I was in a pinch. Put the ford part in and haven't had a problem since.
