7.3L Diesel Excursion, good buy or too much?

I currently have a V10 crew cab and it works fine for what I do but have been wanting more power and better gas mileage as I commute 25 miles a day to work. Is upgrading to the 7.3 an upgrade? How much am I looking at for maintenance? I have only owned one diesel, a 6.9 IDI Ford. Thing was SOLID but had very little power compared to the turbo stuff.

That really depends on who you ask, V10 owners or 7.3L owners.

A lot more (subjective term) than your V10 costs.

In my opinion, that Ex is way overpriced, especially at 171k miles on the odometer.

If you really want an 7.3L Ex, post up in the Excursion forum. We help future Ex owners find their Excursions all the time.

Ok thanks. Wife wants an Ex to replace her current exploder and I was thinking maybe 12k was "reasonable" but still expensive to me for that many miles. But you get what you get up here in the Great North.

If you are not towing, only commuting, I'd expect your current fuel bill to be cheaper. Being up there you should also consider the additional warm-up time or need to plug it in.

That looks like a really clean X. Yeah it would shine up with a bath but if that is their "as used" condition the interior looks great.

I think 19.5k is steep but excursions are like land, they aren't making anymore so you pay what you have to if you have to have one.

I would try to talk them down to 15.5.

As for warm up time...mine gets about the amount of time it takes me to put my seat belt on before I put it in gear and head out. 444,125 miles, (rarely plugged in)and she hasn't complained yet even down to -17f.

Now don't get me wrong but I love our trucks! But a 50 mile commute and I am sure the fuel not as cheap as the lower 48 but I would be drivin something with a little better fuel mileage! Unless yer towing or haulin heavy !

Bought my 03 for $18500 with 83k miles, but I'd looked for a long year to find it. This one seems about 5 grand high to me too. I think you would love it as a commuter vehicle if the price was right.

Personally I'd go with a diesel, 7.3L or 6.0 (must have had updates) I have a 2001 Excursion V-10. Almost a year ago I found a 2002 7.3L within my budget. I love it. My fuel mileage varies from 15 to 19. From winter to summer. Towing mileage drops only a little. The V10 has plenty of power and is very reliable if maintained although I never got better than 11 mpg with the V-10. On the down side of owning a diesel, it is more expensive maintenance wise.

I agree with this as well.....my buddy sold his with 150K last year.....was in great condition and had the rocker panels replaced etc. so not much rust etc.

Sold for $11,500.

If they put like $8,500 in small unmarked bills in the backseat then I would say it was a reasonable deal.
