Hi to all

My 1990 ranger has high power draws in the underhood fuse box. Fuses 2(headlights, 40 amp.) and 8(eec relay) are pinning the ammeter with the key off. Any ideas why, for this kills the battery in no time.

#2 goes to the headlight switch directly and also powers fuse 10 & 11 in the regular fuse panel. 10 goes to the dimmer switch in the headlight switch and 11 goes to the headlight switch for the dome light and also powers the engine compartment lamp, radio & mirrors.

#8 provides power at the EEC relay and the relay will not be engaged with the key off so that should be the end of the circuit with key off.

You will need to use a meter and check all these circuits for a short to ground.

Can you tell me the physical location for the relay and the module. Under the hood of this truck is overwhelming,nand under the dash is even worse.

The relays are under the power distribution box, the fuse box under the hood.

 

Is the eec module in front of the battery? If so, is that the same yellow/black wire going from the relay to the 4th wire from the top of the module? I get good continuity from the fuse to the relay, but very little between the relay and the wire described above.

 

Pardon me- it's the 3rd wire from the top of the module

 

The computer is located behind the passengers kick panel. The yellow black wire runs from fuse 8 to the eec relay, another y/bk wire runs from there to the eec. Since your looking for a short you should check for the wiring shorting to ground with the power off. I'm not clear on the 3rd wire, can you describe them by color.

I'm not sure what module is in front of the battery, but there is 12 wires going into it and the 3rd from the top is yellow/black. I'm done for the night, but I remember either #1 or 2 was yellow/white. But, that's not important now. It's getting cold up here and I need to get this baby running.
I'll look behind that kickpanel first thing in the am.

 

The box between the battery and the air cleaner box is the power distribution box and the relays, is that what you are taking about. I don't think you need to test anything at the EEC unless you find the y/bk wire is shorted to ground.

 

This box is between the grille and the battery.

 

I don't recall anything being there on my 1989 2.9L.

Does anyone else have any ideas on what this is?

 

Here's a strange little twist for you.

The truck was on the street, and being from Nowhere,Canada, all the rubberneckers had to drive by and see what I was doing. That got too scary for me, so i hooked everything up and fired the old baby up. It ran better then it had for a long time. However, after putting it in the driveway, I checked and it was still drawing power the same way, and with the same two fuses.

Why is it running so good? I didn't run it for more than a minute, but that is when it was running it's worst for a long time.

 

That is probably the tfi module, or ignition module. If you follow it, the harness probably goes to the distributor.

 

I got it! I found some damaged wiring and my problems went away (for now). I hope it will get through the winter now. It's getting too cold in the driveway to do this for awhile.
