CHANGING THE ALTERNATOR
A friend at work has an early X and was on a trip to Charleston, SC. He called to say the battery light had come on. I suggested he stop at one of the box part stores and have them check the charging of the alternator since he did not have a volt meter or other hand tools in the vehicle. Well, he stopped by a PEP Boys and they did not have an alternator in stock but did diagnose it as a bad alternator. They wanted his OEM unit for a core charge and I said no, keep it and have it rebuilt and put it back on the truck - it's better than the box store units. After some consideration he found an Auto Zone and they had an alternator in stock for his vehicle, so he purchased it along with a few hand tools and wha-la within the hour he was back on the road again. Now he has some emergency tools and will have a backup alternator for down the road.
I was quite proud of my friend and how he handled the hassle on the road.
I carry a box store alternator and one of those knock-off Denso starters as spares along with a pile of tools for the repairs. I replaced the knock-off Denso with a REAL Denso starter and have never regretted the extra money it cost.
Just a story with a good ending.
