Having to replace the electronic module in my distributor.
what are the steps necessary to disassemble the distributor. Do I need any special tools. The current distributor cap and wires need to be replaced. Can I use a standard type cap on electronic module type distributor.
need to buy or rebuild distributor for 390.
Has an electronic ignition. Is replacing the electronic pick up in the distributor tuff. Do I need special tools. ? How does the distributor come apart.
Sorry for the delay in responses but...
For the most part I believe the guys here are usually in a possition where their current distributor is the old points type unit. The concerns with those are easily resolved as we generally are out buying a whole new electronic DuraSpark distributor, which if I am not mistaken will run about $60 with a core trade in. Two thoughts here. You will probably need to remove the distributor to fix it, so if you can afford it, buy new. Second, it should not be too hard to rebuild, just the usual dissasemble and reassemble backwards....
Good Luck, --MG
If you're talking about a duraspark, the hardest part is taking off the trigger wheel. It's held on to the dist shaft by a roll pin vertically in a groove, drive that down with a small hex key (try really hard not to drop it in the dist, 'cause murphy says it will go all the way to the bottom and force you to disassemble the whole thing to get it back). After the pin is out, or below the ring, just lift the trigger ring/wheel off the shaft and it's self evident how the pickup unit comes out.
You can use the standard cap if you keep the plug gap down. The 2 piece cap will help prevent crossfire, especially with a hot coil and increased plug gaps. They attach to the distributor the same.
Distributor is rebuilt it was easy once I got the pin out.
Elected to stay with the standard type cap.
I purchased a used Edlebrock intake.
Should be here this week.
Any suggestions on a 4 barrel Carb.
I cuurently have a Holley 600 cfm. It is old and dirty but still works. Would I be waisting money to upgrade.
wiznewski,
You have a 76? Does your engine have EGR? If it does, what do you do you have to do to use the Ebrock intake? The only ones I have seen are for non-EGR.
