83 f150 4.9 oil pump problem?

Recently went thru the job of replacing my oil pan gasket, what a PIA. Anyhow, replaced the pick up tube and the oil pump while I was in there. Now the dizzy rotor is hitting the cap. Ever so slightly but I have some plastic wear on both. Does not seem to affect the engine but apparently the pump did not seat right. It seemed to seat to the block ok when I torqued it down and engaged in the dizzy shaft because my oil pressure is ok. Actually better with the new pump.

Check the adapter

I'm not familiar with the dizzy components for your application, but if it is a 3 part assembly, Cap/Adapter/distributor body I would bet your adapter that has 2 adapter retainer clips (one on each side) got tweaked and needs to be taken off and reinstalled, if this is not seated/oriented correctly it would cause the rotor to hit one side

Yes, it is the three part version. I previously checked the adaptor and it is held down by two screws to the main body and it is is tight. This problem came up only after I replaced the oil pump. The engine was running ok after I replaced the pump. I had just failed an emissions test and was doing a major tune up including replacing the cap and rotor otherwise I would have never noticed it.

did your pump shaft have a sleeve retainer that possibly didn't seat all the way up into the dizzy shaft??

Guess I will have to pull dizzy and try to reseat in pump. Cannot believe there is much play in the shaft but guess I will find out. From past experience I know it is a PIA to get the shaft to seat again. Will let you know if it works.

Stupid of me for not posting solution. Thought I did but... Anyhow simple and kind of stupid. The rotor simply was not pushed down far enough on the shaft. Do not know why it was so hard to seat it when I tried old rotors that seated fine before. But that's it.
