I'd recommend a fuel pressure gauge before a 2nd pump. You'll likely find ya won't need the extra pump. This gauge is an excellent diagnostic tool because our PCM does not monitor fuel pressure. It also allows you to get the most out of your filter because there is no reason to change it until fuel pressure drops off.
The pre-pump filter protects the pump, the other filter protects the injectors.
I've installed a bunch of WIX 33972 filters pre-pump by replacing the hose between pump and hard line to tank with 30R9 hose and put the filter there - using fuel injection hose clamps.

You shouldn't really see any drop with stock injectors. I wonder if you'd see a difference if ya swap pumps? (To one that doesn't have debris stuck in it from not running a filter! )

stock injectors with a stock tune I drop to psi from 60 to 58. stock injectors 80 horsepower tune or 140 horsepower tune I drop to 52 psi. I have these numbers before I did the hutch mod on it that is why I did it in the first place besides the fact that I was going to get the bigger injectors. I can switch to my extra pump and see what that does? I also thought about the Walbro pump.

Not sure you'd see a change with another stock pump. I'd say lets see how it performs with a fresh filter and your new injectors before spending any money. All it takes to install the WIX 33972 is several inches of 30R9 or comparable fuel hose and (4) fuel injection hose clamps. Just remove the hose from the back of the pump, back to the hard line and replace with this hose and filter.
I'd hate to say you might be like Rich - but it's possible you have vacuum leaks between pump and tank. Rarely, the quick-connect fittings do leak under vacuum.
