The other day I was hauling water like normal when I noticed the OD light on shiftier blinking and the low range 4x4 light came on then flickered and the speed odometer stopped working... The truck drove normal and I continued on. well yesterday the check engine light came on so I hit the code reader and it said PO500 and PO500pd which is My vss needs replaced. Well there r 2 from what I can tell on my truck replaced them both and and still no speed odometer and the codes are coming up the same .... Now I am worried cuz I have to use this truck daily and i dont know what to do.... Please someone tell me what to check or what to replace.... Thank you so much for reading my post .... Hi ghostdog,
I'm a little confused as to what you're asking about, the truck you mention doesn't exist. The 1997 F250 HD looks like this:
But it was never offered with the 4.6L engine, that was a completely separate truck. The 1997 F250 light duty looked like this:
And was also never available with the 4.6L engine. This truck was only available with the 5.4L.
So which truck do you have?

Okay, that's an F250 Light Duty. I've never seen or heard of one with the 4.6, but looks like I was wrong on that.
I'm moving this to the F150 forum. Yours is mostly identical to the '97 F150, but with heavier suspension, hubs, and tires. They should be better able to help you in this forum.
