Does any one know if 1994 navestar 7.3 idi block the same as 6.9 idi???
Hello all new to this form and new to ford Idi I have a 1994 4600 7.3 idi. That's need of a lot of help no power and burns oil. I have an allison transmission in the truck. What I have read the blocks from a 6.9 and 7.3 are the same if so is that true with the navestar 7.3 also?
The reason I'm asking if they are I have found a 1988 6.9 with 135k banks turbo that I want to swap motors with.
Any info would be great or if there is a thread on this please let me know
Thanks Michael

there are a lot of differences, however for the sake of your question; yes you can bolt in a 6.9l idi engine where there was once a 7.3l idi and it will mate to the same transmission the 7.3l idi was mated to.

i bet that's some handy! hows she setup? welding rig, utility, bucket, crane, dump, rollback etc?
she'll have a bit more pep in her step with a turbo on there too.no doubt you'll like that better. nice low miles engine too.pretty confident the mileage is legit?
so whats the GVWR of these, over 26k lbs and require cdl i assume? man i could make great use of one of these for a few days hauling some earth in to my new property!
oh man i might have to put one of these on my list next! somebody stop me!
good luck man!

the only differences that i know of, is that the 94 has a serp system. can be swapped to the 6.9
the 6.9 has smaller oil ports.
and of course a smaller bore.
im curious as to if that 6.9 is a 88... i am under the impression that the 7.3's replaced the 6.9's in mid to late 87.
on my stock 87 6.9, the GPC was on the back of the engine, and my 94 7.3 has it mounted on the pass side valve cover.
enerything should be interchangeable.
use your 94 wiring harness.

I think what the OP may be asking is if the IH medium duty trucks interchanged with the Ford pick up blocks. There are quite a few IH vs Ford differences, oil sump valve covers, IP gear cover, manifolds, water outlet casting etc., etc., but the block, heads, and internals are the same. And just as all the bolt-on parts interchange between 7.3 and 6.9, everything between Ford and IH will cross over as well. Only thing I am not 100% about is the manifolds and the Banks sidewinder. You might need to keep the Ford manifolds if there are no other fitment issues. I hope I understood the question, as noted above there are definitely 6.9 vs 7.3 internal block differences, but for the purposes of engine swapping everything 6.9 or 7.3, Ford or IH will all bolt up.
Edit: just for your information 1987 was the last year for the 6.9. A 1988 engine should actually be a 7.3

Thank you all so much big help being new to ford 6.9 and 7.3. There are two trucks I've been looking at one is an 86 with 170k and the other is a 88 137k both have the banks turbo. If the 88 is a 7.3 it's the cheaper of the two.
Also what automatic transmission came in the 88 f250 7.3?
The truck is a 4600 rollback with stinger and aire ride seat. For the long delv. trips I live in the Seattle area lots of hills and mnts around here so any extra power would be awesome.

that is a tough question.
when i pull the cab on my 88 i am replacing the oil pan and valve cover gaskets on it because it has 494,000 miles and leaks from all the gaskets. surprisingly, the front and rear mains are the only things that do not leak.
it probably will not hurt to change them. i would most likely do valve cover and oil pan gaskets just because it is easier to do while out.
and you may have to swap the oil pan and oil pump pickup tube to the international truck one, the pickup pan may be different.

I'm likely interested in buying your OD unit when you have it off (depending upon various details of its type and condition and such).
