1993 idi oil change questions

Oil always stays black that normal? just put brand new oil and its black first start. what do you change the oil at what interval

Yep, it's normal, diesels show contamination in the oil after the first start.

Interval is a matter of opinion/choice, but anything under 5K is overkill.

What i normally do for oil changes on any old diesel engine is; Get it up to normal operating temperature, shut it down, add a quart of diesel fuel to the oil, then run for 5 minutes, shut down and drain overnight from pan and filter. gets it to stay cleaner after the first run. Works for dump trucks tractors etc. Just an idea if you want a "cleaner" looking oil, but otherwise i really wouldn't worry.

ya goes dark pretty quickly I use moble 1- 601 filter (its a power stroke filter) it employs a duel stage filtration, and is larger than a Idi filter, fits most aplications (11 quarts) oil.

much larger than a oem psd filter too.

Ya, black oil is just part of the game.

I too run the M1-601 filters, I found them on sale at amazon for 7 bucks a pop, and I only bought 2? What was I thinking????!!!

i was silly as well.i only grabbed 4 during that $7 each time period and iv got 2 trucks......darn i should have grabbed a dozen.
