overheated c6 tranny
Hey guys long story short my 72 f100 390/c6 got stuck in some mud before school. I had to get out and managed to but I overheated the check out of the tranny. It slips bad but once moving it shifts ok. The fluid is Brown and this tranny was rebuilt 8k miles ago. Will a full fluid change save it???

I was raggin on it really hard getting out of That mud for about 20 mins. It was constantly going from 1st hear to reverse over and i over rocking it back and forth, not drive but 1st. I overheated the motor but it is ok I pulled it apart for a bad lifter and a bent valve but the headgaskets were ok. But the tranny I'm worried about

Change the fluid a couple of times. Do this with a bucket of
new fluid pumped in through the cooling lines. Than add
Lucas trans treatment. This snake oil is the only one I have
ever had any luck with. If this don't help than your clutches
and band linings are worn out and she needs a rebuild. Sorry
but unless the vacuum line got pulled off the modulator while
stuck in the mud there isn't much else you can do.

No, it will not. You've destroyed it. You can change the fluid as many times as you like, it won't build new friction material on the destroyed clutch. You can also add any additives you can find. They also won't build new friction material. The only way to fix this trans is to rebuild it.

Edit, he said it was before school so I'm assuming he's a younger guy, I definitely wasn't very nice to my trucks when I was a young guy, I did learn a lot about my trucks through my experiences though!

If you're going to do an AOD swap, you'll have to buy an adapter to couple the AOD to the 390. There are no 'modern' Ford overdrive transmissions (built in the last 25 years) that will directly bolt up to an FE.

I don't know if there are any aftermarket 3.73 ratios available for a Ford 9-inch (??, never seen any) but, there were no factory 3.73s in a 9-inch. However, 3.70 was a common factory ratio for Ford 9-inch rears in the trucks.
