4WD 'farm' truck advice

I need a farm truck in central KY. Will be looking for a 73-79 F100/F150 or even F250.

What are some engine/transmission/transfer case options to look for or even stay away from. I've seen the full time 4WD trucks and one was listed with a NP230.

Thanks for the tips.

for a farm truck if it runs and drives it really dont matter. i have owned 2 highboys with the 203 and i like them both. dont have to get out to lock in the hubs. ya it gets a little worse fuel milage but that dont really bother me. i would say for simplicity sakes if you want a 3/4 ton get a 77 and up truck. better steering better brakes no third driveshaft to worry about. yes the 351/400 does have a bad reputation but hey if it run leave it be. plus if it dies the newer trucks are a better 460 swap truck. good luck on you hunt.

I say go for that 79..

The high boys are good trucks but the steering problems are overwhelming

Is that 76 F150 a highboy? Doesn't say it - he claims to have lifted it.

My opinion (everybody has one)

Unless you have creek crossings I would not go with anything lifted. Getting stuff in and out of the bed becomes a pain.

Would try to find a super cab. The extra space is nice for keeping chainsaws, chains, and tools you might need. Keeps them out of the bed.

No F100, F150 or F350 is a High Boy!

High Boy ~ Enthusiast term for: 1967/76 F250 4WD & 1977 F250 4WD before serial number Y20,001.

High Boys have a 5 or 6 front leaf spring pack, a divorced transfer case and an in-cab fuel tank.

Super Cab introduced in 1974, but there is no High Boy Super Cab...were only available as Regular & Crew Cabs.

1973/77 High Boys were available with Power Assist P/S. There were two different types, Garrison & Bendix. Replacement parts for both are slim & none.

btw: No F100 4WD's after 1976.
