You need to get more info, like from a scanner

OBDII was mandated in 96, that was the first year for it.

you aren't suffering from anything mechanical...i.e. fuel filter, air filter, oil filter, etc.

codes.

If you are right that it's EEC-IV, then yes, pulling codes will still tell you something. That system stores codes too. You just read them a little different from OBDII, and you need a different decoder list.

Regardless of whether it's obd1 or obd2, the 7.3ps has a super helpful diagnostic system. Furthermore there are obd1 and obd2 scanners available so whether it's obd1 or obd2 is irrelevant. Any diesel shop will scan it for you if you don't want to source one.

NOT OBD1. Only the 94s were and the FIRST time they were taken to the dealer the ECM was typically reflashed to OBD2.

You need a scanner that will work with Diesels. Advance and auto zones do NOT work on these trucks

That was my point.

The other (minor) thing is that there's not realy any such thing as OBD1. Ford called their Electronic Engine Controls EEC-__, with increasing numbers as the generations went on. EEC-V coincides with the government-mandated change to a common platform, which was called OBDII, but the Ford EEC-IV (that preceded OBDII didn't really have any other name.

If you are buying a code reader, any OBDII will work for any make. But if you're looking for an "OBD1" reader you need to get a reader that works with Ford's EEC-IV, a Chevy "OBD1" reader won't necessarily work.

But back to the point, either system gives helpful codes. And although a code reader can make it easier to read EEC-IV codes, all you really need is a way to jump the Self Test In wire (in the EEC test plug near the driver's side hood hinge) to ground. Then when you turn the key on the check engine light will flash the codes.

Like I said. You need more info than no codes. You need to drive the truck with the scanner it it and look at all the parameters
