1985 F150 300 six fuel pumps inop

*** This is a 1995, not 1985 ****Hi: I am trying to get this truck running after sitting about 5 years. It has dual tanks, I dropped the back one to see if they were gummed up, the fuel inside was fine and I out it back in. Then I removed the fuel filter, put a new battery in and hit the switch, but no fuel comes out of the line and I can not hear either of the pumps operating. Any idea where i should start troubleshooting? The truck was running before, and the selector switch seems to be working, as the fuel level changes when I hit it.

You can start by grounding pin #6 of the self-test plug and turning on the key.

If the pumps run at this point you either have a bad ground or no power to the computer or a bad computer.

If the pumps do not run with the above test then trace out the wires from the relay to the rank pump.

Push down on the fuel shut off switch. Also just because the fuel gauge moves when you change the tank selection does not mean the switch is good. The power to the fuel pump and the to the gauge are two different systems using the same switch.

Thank you for the info. I finally found my Haynes manual and they advised to do the exact thing. No sound in either tank. The Ford parts guy said to suspect the fuel tank selector switch, so I pulled that out and tested it with the ohmmeter , showed good. So...being skeptical of things, I located the hot pin (the pink and black wire) on each wiring pigtail and connected a test clip to my + wire on my tester, grounded the black wire on the tester and did the test again. Showed voltage to both tanks commensurate with the proper setting on the selector switch. So I dropped the tanks and pulled the fuel pump hanger out and tested it outside the tank directly. They both clicked, but that was it. The fuel level unit on the mid tank was toast, but the rear tank was in much better shape. Called all the parts stores, they all have the pump, but none had the sending unit. Called the ford place....OMG...the fuel pump hanger with the pump and WITHOUT the sending unit was $500+. I told them it was completely ridiculous, that two of those and two tanks would total the truck. I found an aftermarket assembly at a wholsale place for $160, will get that Mon. Will update the progress, this is all due to to it sitting.
