The one good thing about remote access is that I can bill an hour for just logging in and checking email. Instead of claiming 8 vacation hours, I claim 7. It's not much but it helps.

Bingo! I'm not a consultant anymore, but I have similar luxuries at my new job. We're getting ready to embark on a 12 day trip to South Dakota, and I figure I'll check email at the end of every day after the kids are in bed and save me a day of vacation. Works for me!

Or....that trip can be a 2 week trip, where you are working remote some of the time, and taking vacation the other part of the time. The two week trip only costs a week of vacation, but you get to enjoy wherever you are at for longer! As I get closer to retirement, as an IT professional that lives in Michigan, I'd love to be able to take my Cardinal somewhere warm for a few winter months, and work from there instead of plodding into the office everyday. But, alas, since I work for a bank, they want to keep their folks "on-site", although that is starting to change a bit.

I have one financial client that requires access from their company laptop only. Even with that, the security is significant. Two factor RSA VPN, but then simple WinAD login to remote desktop. Working for multiple clients, it's interesting to see how security is implemented. Another client has simple VPN, but then uses two factor on the remote desktop.

Regarding the working on the road, I don't know that I'll ever convince my wife to do that. She complains that I'm "loud" when I work. I would need a trailer with a separate room for an office.

I've got a couple clients that I work for on the side in addition to my 'day' job. My goal of retirement is to keep a couple of those clients and work from the road a few days here and there while my wife and I travel. I generally work from home 3-4 days a week for my normal job as well.

Cool info on cell boosters. Does anyone know if the opposite is available? Something to weaken my cell signal. I already switched to sprint for crappier service, but that backfired on me and now i get better cell reception at my house. I miss the days of 10-15 years ago loosing signal quite often and not having to be instantly available 24/7
There is a cell reducer built into the phone....... Also called an off switch.......

You have perfectly described T-Mobile. Our work phones hardly ever work. In fact, the company offered us all boosters on request when we switched to T-Mobile, but the demand for boosters was so high, few people actually got them. I was one of the lucky ones who did NOT.
