Tips to pull speedo in '87-'91?
Want to replace the illumination bulbs with LEDs, but couldn't get the speedo out last weekend. Also want to clean/lube the trip odometer which resets but then doesn't run.
Any tips on pulling the gauge cluster out? I'm guessing the speedo cable is holding it in place, but darned if I could get that bugger out. Thanks!

first, remove headlight ****, either release the clip, or drop the fuse panel cover, pull the light **** out all the way, reach under dash with one hand, hold the button down on side of switch, with other hand pull shaft out, then reinsert far enough to cut lights off, but not far enough to lock the shaft back in the switch. I prefer the second method. The remove the wiper ****, just pull it off, pop the 2 lower dash panels off, one has a torx bit holding it on. then move to the upper gauge cluster bezel, remove screws, pull it out. remove screws for gauge cluster, then reach behind and undo the clip for the speedo cable, and the two plug or plugs (can remember) for the gauge cluster, and undo the cable for the gear indicator if its automatic.

Already did all the earlier stuff, and even replaced the turn signal flasher lights, but couldn't figure out how to unclip the speedo cable. I assume that's what's holding it in place at this point. Couldn't reach the back of the gauge cluster from either underneath or by pulling the cluster out of the dash and grabbing it from the top or side.
Truck is a manual, so at least I don't have to deal with that indicator.
Thanks again.

To give yourself some more room to get your hand behind the cluster to release the speedo cable, take the cable off the transmission (or xfer case, if 4x4) and then go under the dash, behind the gas pedal, and you will see the cable going up to the cluster. After taking everything else loose up top, grab the cable and pull it up from the floor about a foot, pushing it upward. It will push the cluster out away from the dash so you can reach in behind and release it.
