Help with timing set up on new 390

I am building a 390 to replace my 360 in my 74 swb 4x4. My question is was the timing ever detuned for the 390 like it was for the 360. And if so what would the best year to buy a new timing set up for. Thanks

Just buy an aftermarket double roller. It will allow several cam settings, including advanced, retarded or straight up, some with several choices for advance and retard.

What cam and pistons?

Cowers 16903 power beast. The Pistons are a forged Keith black set. Should be around 9.5 to 1 cr. I am going to install the cam straight up. Just wanted to make sure I wasn't going have a issue with the timing gears. Thanks for the help

Straight up is the way I'd do it. Eliminates confusion down the line when no one remembers.

I put in a Cloyes double roller straight up. No issues with fitting the timing cover.

Here is what I installed. http://www.summitracing.com/parts/cl...view/make/ford
The Summit and Edelbrock were a little bit cheaper, at the time, but I researched this forum and others to get a sense of what brand most people used. Cloyes only makes timing related products and seeing the state of the stock chain that I replaced made me want something stout. I also replaced the cam bolt with one from ARP. Good luck.
