As a fellow FE owner, I'd get anything other than glasspacks. Mine has a nice rumble down low, but at highway speed around 2k rpm it's just annoying noise. I don't have a recommendation other than the above from my perspective.

A Flowmaster Super 10...it's worth at least 50 hp.

May be five-inch pipes, a pine tree air freshener, and those waaaaaay cool stick-on simulated vents like a 56 Buick. Your rig will be the talk of the town.

I have 18in glasspacks on my 390 with Sanderson headers. I planned on it being loud and havin that classic cherry bombs sound, but it's actually pretty quiet with a little rumble at idle. It may have to do with that right after the cherry bombs I have turn downs before the axles. If you like the sound of glasspacks I'd run more pipe after the tubes, at least that's what I'm thinking of doin to mabe bring out more of that sound.

I like "turbo" style mufflers. Not too loud at cruise and a decent bellow at WOT. Less restriction vs stock type. Also very resistant to "drone". The AP store or Summit will have a basic version at reasonable cost and Dynomax and others offer higher end versions which may last longer.

I couldn't be happier with Summit's Street and Strip mufflers. They are a two chamber style like the Flowmaster 40s. Nice deep rumble at idle and downright brutal at WOT. They also do not have the "tinny" sound that my turbo style mufflers. For $30 they are extremely well constructed.

Lots of great ideas, but this is going to 100% come down to your personal preference.

I really like the Magnaflows that are on my truck, but cannot confirm how they sound on the road, the truck is still not road worthy.

These are what I used.

I currently have a 2ea 2.5 in and out Flowmaster in my 75 460. Before that, I had a huge Cherry Bomb in my 84 with the I6. Loved the sound of both.

the local muffler has an in house glasspack that sounds good on fe motors deep deep sound, may end up going with the, also may go thrush rout( buddy put to on a gmc v6 and they sound quiet, although a 390 should be louder), or i may go flow master 40's

2x with Summit's welded mufflers.

Alternatively, Magnaflow's perforated core, straight-thru design.

Timely post for me. I need to decide on mufflers this week.

Don't want it to be too loud since I'll be taking a lot of camping trips with the family in this so fairly long trips at freeway / highway speeds.

I had flowmaster 40's on my old '66 Mustang and it sounded great, but maybe a bit too much drone for 200 mile trips. Sounded awesome though.

I have a set of Magnaflows on my 2005 Mustang GT that I really like, might go that route. Agressive tone, sounds great at idle and WOT - but not too loud. Of course a totally different engine so not apples to apples.

Keep the recommendations coming!

I'm partial to round body mufflers.. oval case mufflers get "big" when locating them between the frame and the driveshaft due to the driveline offset (Measure from the driveshaft to each frame rail and you'll see what I mean). And some will mount oval-cased mufflers vertically which I find odd. That tells me the owner had to have the oval cases no matter what.

Magnaflows and 2.5-inch tubing.. with a slight mod to the trans crossmember.

I've got cheery bombs on mine. And while I like the sound, and the rumble I just don't like them at cruise. I guess I just kind of grew out of it or something.
