Hooking up a classic instruments gauge cluster, got a fuel gauge question

The one lead goes to the sender. The other lead is connected to the G (gauges) terminal on the ignition switch along with the other two original gauges by means of shorting bars connecting the grounds on all three gauges. Of course, you need to protect them from 12 volts with a reducer.

The instructions say to attach the sending side to a certain terminal on the gauge cluster and mentions nothing about the other. I assumed it was a ground until it smoked when I turn the key, unles i grounded the wrong one, fortunately I checkef it before I hooked up the gauges This is why I've stuck to engines and thanies, I hate electrical,

Will do, just thinking that since there are two leads on the back of the original gage one must be a power lead and since there is only one on the CI unit the power must be supplied by one of the + terminals Was just hoping to get it done before I'm traveling for a couple weeks tomorrow
I will keep you updated
Thanks again

Classic is usually pretty good about sending wiring inst. G= ground,S= sender I = Ignition, Volt gauge only has a wire to I from ignition switch
