casting number location

Hey guys.
I am looking at buying a 99 ranger from this used car dealership. the odometer has 98K but he said the engine had been replaced with a 2000 model that has 55K mi on it. WHere is the casting number located so i can tell if it is a 2000 engine or not? is there any way to tell if that engine actually has 55K miles on it?
thanks
David

P.S. he is asking $5488 and says he paid more than $3200 (my offer) before he replaced the engine, clutch, and throw out bearing. What do ya think?
